Thymus Silver Queen

Easy to grow on a patio or balcony

A pretty thyme with small, oval dark green leaves edged with white on fine, wiry stems. The overall effect is light and airy, the foliage appearing silver from a distance. The leaves are intensely aromatic and perfect for cooking. Tiny heads of pink-purple flowers appear at the tips of the shoots in early summer; these are very attractive to bees in search of nectar and pollen. A charming plant whether grown with other herbs or with other ornamentals. Perfect for small gardens.

Where?

Plant in full sun at the front of beds and borders, in gravel or in gaps in paving. Ideal for a rock garden. Perfect for pots and containers.

How?

Any well drained soil. On heavy soils mulch the soil surface with grit or gravel to protect from winter wet. Remove dead or damaged growth as necessary and clip over after flowering. A very drought tolerant plant once established.

Thyme has culinary and medicinal uses as well as ornamental. The ancient Egyptians used it for embalming

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
