Rocket Salad

Eruca sativa

Unique pungent, peppery flavour

A fast, easy and very rewarding annual herb, with delicious dark green peppery leaves. The creamy yellow flowers are also very attractive and you can eat them too.

Where?

Best in part shade, try planting alongside perennials if space is limited or grow in a container.

How?

A fertile, well-drained soil is best. Pick the leaves as needed. Use a good quality general purpose compost for container growing.

The leaves and flowers are edible and add a pungent peppery flavour to salads. Thought by the Roman's to be an aphrodisiac.

Planting instructions

Choose a container, with drainage holes at least twice the size of the one the plant is currently growing in. Place stones, broken up flowerpots or polystyrene in a thin layer over the holes to help with drainage. Place a layer of multi-purpose compost on top. Remove the pot and position the plant so the top of the rootball sits 2.5cm below the rim of the pot. Fill around the rootball with compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered especially through dry spells.
