Lovage

Lovage

A perennial that is both decorative and delicious

Lovage is a beautiful herb with handsome leaves on strong upright stems that add texture to the back of a border. Clusters of yellow flowers are seen in summer and the leaves and stems can be used like celery in soups and stews. Dies back in winter but comes back each spring.

Where?

Happiest in shade and soil which is not too dry in summer.

How?

Add garden compost or well rotted manure to the soil when planting. Remove dead stems in autumn once the plant is safely below ground for the winter months.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
