An essential herb for the keen cook or if you love Italian food. A tender herb that will happily grow outside through the summer. It forms a neat mound of large fresh green leaves which have a spicy aroma and flavour.


Easy to grow in a sunny spot. Perfect for herb gardens or the front of a border, and also great for a container by the kitchen door or on a bright window ledge, happy in a moist but well drained soil.


Protect from frost and water well throughout the summer. Harvest the leaves as required until the autumn. Use a good quality potting compost for container growing.

Add the leaves to salads, sauces and soups. Great for pesto and flavouring oils and bread. The flowers are also edible.

Planting instructions

Choose a container, with drainage holes at least twice the size of the one the plant is currently growing in. Place stones, broken up flowerpots or polystyrene in a thin layer over the holes to help with drainage. Place a layer of multi-purpose compost on top. Remove the pot and position the plant so the top of the rootball sits 2.5cm below the rim of the pot. Fill around the rootball with compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered especially through dry spells.
