Heather

Long lasting pink flowers in winter

A charming compact evergreen to add winter colour to your garden. It has clusters of bell-shaped lilac pink flowers, from December to May, which darken as they age. The needle-like green leaves are tipped pink-white in spring.

Where?

A low maintenance plant and happiest growing in full sun. Perfect for planting at the front of a border, use as ground cover on banks and slopes or in containers.

How?

Heathers like acidic well-drained soil so if planting in a container use ericaceous compost - specially formulated for acid loving plants.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. If planting in a bed or border test the soil to establish its pH. If the soil is too alkali it is best to grow your plant in a container. In either case prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig ericaceous compost into the base of the hole, if planting in a container use ericaceous compost to fill the pot. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
