Polystichum polyblepharum

Japanese Tassel Fern

Evergreen form providing all year round interest

This elegant evergreen fern has gently arching dark green, shiny feather-like leaves. Before they unfurl the new leaves are covered with golden hairs, giving them a tassel-like appearance. This clump-forming fern is easy to grow and forms a distinctive shuttlecock shape.

Ideal in full or part shade in borders and beds, use for planting under shrubs or in containers where it will give year round interest.

Loves any well-drained, moist soil. Water well until established and mulch in spring with garden compost or bark chippings. Use a good quality potting compost for container growing.

A native of Japan and South Korea.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
