Penstemon Fujiyama

PollinatorAward

penstemon 'Yayama'

Stunning bi-colour flowers

A new compact variety of this popular plant with the longest flowering period in the perennial border. Unlike many modern hybrids, the Volcano series retain the lightness of character of the old garden penstemons. Graceful stems with slender, evergreen pointed leaves are topped with loose spikes of glowing light pink over a white base with white throats streaked with crimson. Growing to 60cm (2ft) it is perfect for the middle of a border with other perennials and shrubs; also a good choice for summer colour on the patio.

Where?

Plant in full sun or semi-shade in beds and borders. Thrives almost anywhere. Suitable for pots and containers.

How?

Remove flower spikes when the blooms have faded. Cut back dead and damage stems in late winter; shorten others by one third. If cut back to ground level flowering is late the following season. No support required.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
