Papaver orientale Brilliant, 1ltr

PollinatorAward

Oriental poppy

More compact variety

A vibrant oriental poppy producing huge, single, scarlet flowers in late spring or early summer. The petals of each bloom have silky petals, waved at the edges, with large, shining black heart-shaped blotches at the base. They are carried on 75cm (30ins) stems high above the bristly, toothed leaves which emerged earlier in the year. Although the blooms are not long lived the display is outstanding and the petals fall to leave large architectural poppy heads which are good for cutting.

Where?

Plant in full sun in beds and borders with other herbaceous perennials. Do not overcrowd with shrubs and trees. Will establish in thin rough grass.

How?

Any well-drained fertile soil. The foliage dies down in summer, so position alongside later flowering perennials to maintain the display. Remove dead leaves and flower stems as required after they have faded.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
