Peony

Beautifully scented

This lovely plant has long been grown in our gardens and begins the year as red shoots, piercing through the soil. These open to bronze-green leaves which frame the frilly, double peach-pink flowers in midsummer.

Where?

Peonies do not like to be disturbed so choose a sheltered, sunny site and rich soil.

How?

Add organic matter to the soil before planting - home made garden compost or well rotted manure are fine. Cut back old stems to the ground in late spring when new leaves are seen.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
