Paeonia lactiflora Inspecteur Lavergne

Stunning scented flowers

A classic peony with fabulous ball-shaped blooms of rich crimson red in early summer. Each flower is globe of frilled petals, tinged with silver on the inside of the flower. The strong stems carry handsome dark green leaves which remain attractive through to autumn. The flowers are excellent for cutting if gathered when in bud.

Plant in full sun or semi-shade with other perennials and away from competition with the roots of trees and shrubs.

Any well-drained fertile soil. Good on clay and heavy soils that are not waterlogged. Remove faded flowers and cut back faded stems and leaves in winter. Feed generously in spring.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
