Dahlia Melody

Bright flowers contrasted by dark foliage

A lovely decorative dahlia that stays short and compact. The rich, dark leaves provide a handsome background for the masses of double flowers. The vibrant colours range from hot oranges, reds and yellow to softer tones of pink, and the flowers are as delightful in a vase as in the garden.

Where?

A sun lovers which looks great in a bed, mixed border or large container.

How?

Happiest in rich, fertile well-drained soil and give plenty of water and regular feeding through the summer. Enrich the soil with organic matter before planting - home made garden compost or well rotted manure is fine. Use a good quality potting compost for container growing. This tall variety should be staked using bamboo canes for support.

Dahlias grow from a storage organ called a tuber. In mild regions they may be left in the ground year round and generously mulched in autumn. Otherwise lift before the frosts and store in a cool, dry, dark place until spring.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
