Crocosmia Lucifer

GardenAward

Montbretia

Vibrant, deep red flowers

Tall arching spikes of fiery red, freesia-like flowers arise from a large handsome clump of green, sword-shaped leaves from mid to late summer. A super choice for any hot planting scheme, it makes a long lasting cut flower too.

Where?

Perfect for a large container or sunny borders.

How?

Easy to grow in a fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Enrich the soil with organic matter before planting - home made garden compost or well rotted manure is fine. Use good quality loam based compost for container growing and raise the pot on 'pot feet' through the winter months to help with drainage.

The botanical name of Crocosmia originates from the Greek for 'smelling of saffron'.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
