Bergenia ciliataDumbo

Elephant's Ears

A decorative ground cover

A very collectable Bergenia with large rounded leaves lightly covered in fine downy hairs. The short spikes of flowers appear pale pink in spring, darkening as the season progresses. This slow growing plant is well worth planting and makes a superb container plant.

Where?

Best grown in sun or partial shade in a bed or mixed border where it combines beautifully with the delicate fronds of ferns.

How?

Grow in a moist, well-drained soil, it can also do well in dry shade. Just cut back the faded blooms after flowering in spring.

Unlike most bergenias 'Dumbo' has deciduous leaves that will die back for the winter.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
