Astilbe japonica Younique Lilac

False Spiraea

Large plumes of light pink flowers in mid summer

The plume-like flowerheads of astilbes make a spectacular display in mid-summer above bushy clumps of shining fern-like leaves. Younique Lilac is exceptionally free flowering with fragrant plumes of lilac flowers to 30cm (12") over dark green leaves. The flowers are attractive to bees and moths and are ideal to provide light height at the front of a border. Astilbes make excellent planting partners for hostas and other moisture-loving perennials.

Where?

Plant in sun or light shade in beds or borders. Lovely for waterside planting. Good in pots and containers.

How?

Any moist fertile soil. Astilbes hate dry conditions so pay attention to watering in pots. Flower plumes turn brown and stay intact as they fade; remove them when they lose appeal. Cut back to ground level in winter.

In ancient Greek Astilbe means without brilliance, inappropriate considering the flower power of the plant.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
