Anemone coronaria De Caen Bordeaux

Garden anemone, Irish anemone, Poppy windflower, St Brigid's anemone

Stunning early season flowers

This wonderful variety of the familiar florist’s anemone is a charming garden plant which, once established will bloom year after year. The buds emerge in mid to late spring from a clump of parsley like leaves. The blooms, carried on 30cm (1ft) stems, are single and cup shaped, with rich burgundy petals that surround a 'puff' of black stamens. Lovely for cutting and bringing indoors.

A sheltered position in full sun where the soil gets baked in the summer. At the front of a bed or border, or in a pot on the patio for early colour.

Any very well drained soil. Dies down by late summer. Remove old flower stems and faded leaves and mark planting position.

Anemone De Caen gets its name from the districts on Caen and Bayeux in France where it was cultivated in the 18th century

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
