Alcea rosea Chater's White, 1ltr

Hollyhock

Stunning large white flowers

A magnificent cottage garden plant with strong, tall stems which grow quickly to 180cm (6ft) carrying double peony-like, powder-puff blooms of pure white from mid-late summer. Stunning against a backdrop of dark evergreens. Excellent for coastal gardens. Although not long-lived as perennials the plants seed themselves freely.

Where?

Plant in full sun and do not overcrowd with other plants. Perfect for the back of a border or in a narrow border along a wall or fence.

How?

Any well-drained soil; hollyhocks hate wet conditions. Can be cut back immediately after flowering of left to seed for future years. No support required in sheltered situations.

Hollyhocks have been grown in gardens for centuries. There is evidence that the stems have been used as firewood and the roots medicinally

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.

Planting site Cottage garden, City garden, Courtyard garden, Coastal or drought resistant
