Magnify glass

Thujopsis dolabrata

Creates and interesting specimen

A distinctive conifer eventually growing into a large evergreen shrub, broad and conical in habit. The flattened sprays of shining green foliage are antler like giving the plant an open, loose character. Flecked with white on the underside the scale-like leaves are very reflective and waxy in appearance. As the plant becomes more mature the branches near the top grow outwards and upwards making a distinctive crown. A good structure shrub with all-year-round appeal.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in beds and borders. Use as a specimen or a screening or background shrub.

Plant on any well-drained fertile soil, including chalk. No pruning is necessary, but the plants can be trimmed in spring or late summer to encourage denser growth or restrict height.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
