Thuja plicata Little Boy

White cedar 'Little Boy'

All year round interest

A compact dwarf variety of western red cedar forming a rounded shrub eventually 90cm (3ft) in height. The neat flattened sprays of foliage are densely packed giving the shrub a velvety appearance. The plant is green in the centre, golden yellow at the tips of the shoots becoming bronze-orange in cold winter weather. A great plant to add year round colour, ideal for a small garden.

Where?

Plant in full sun or partial shade at the front of beds and borders. Good for raised beds, rock and gravel gardens, also pots and containers.

How?

Any well-drained fertile soil. Cover the surface of the ground around the plant with grit or gravel to avoid soil splash onto the foliage. Use a loam-based compost in pots. No pruning required.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
