Thuja occidentalis Sunkist

GardenAward

Natural pyramid shape of bright yellow foliage

This conifer has a coat of many colours with rusty orange leaves through the winter and bright yellow new growth in spring. A pyramid of evergreen interest throughout the year and slow growing enough for even the smallest of gardens.

Where?

Happiest in full sun and most garden soils as long as not waterlogged in winter. A great choice for a large container in a sunny spot.

How?

Enrich the soil with organic matter before planting - homemade garden compost or well rotted manure is fine for this. Use good quality loam based compost for container gardening and raise the pot on pot feet through the winter months to help with drainage.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
