Thuja occidentalis Smaragd

GardenAward

Forms a tight upright conical shape

A neat conifer with a dense, tidy habit. The plant grows into a pyramid of bright emerald green leaves which are very distinctive. The whole plant glows in the winter garden when conifers really love to show off!

Where?

Happy in sun or part shade and most garden soils that are not wet in winter. Also a good choice for a large container where the plant will be happy for many years.

How?

Enrich the soil with organic matter before planting - homemade garden compost is fine for this. Use a good quality loam based compost for container growing and raise the pot on pot feet through the winter months to help with drainage.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
