Thuja occidentalis Golden Smaragd

Forms a tight upright conical shape

‘Smaragd’ is perhaps the best neat, slender, conical conifer growing slowly to form a neat cone 1.8m (6ft) or more high but only 90cm (3ft) across at the base. The flattened sprays of foliage give the plant a crushed velvet appearance that will enhance the garden throughout the year. Golden Smaragd is a new introduction with bright golden flushed foliage throughout the year. An excellent focal point in any garden; lovely against a dark background.

Where?

Plant in full sun or partial shade in beds and borders. Good as a stand along specimen or in a large pot.

How?

Any well-drained fertile soil. Avoid waterlogged or very dry conditions. No pruning required.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
