Thuja occidentalis Danica

White cedar

Produces a perfect topiary ball without trimming

A superb, globe-shaped dwarf conifer growing slowly to 90cm (3ft) in diameter. The flattened sprays of glossy, emerald green, aromatic foliage are held vertically and give the plant wonderful texture. An excellent structure shrub that gives the appearance of a trimmed sphere, but one that grows quite naturally to that shape and never gets too large. Perfect for the small garden.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in beds and borders. Good for rock and gravel gardens, also pots and containers.

Any well-drained fertile soil. Use a loam-based compost in pots. No pruning required.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
