Microbiota decussata

GardenAward

Russian arbor-vitae, Siberian carpet cypress

Produces a soft mound of foliage when mature

An unusual and most attractive spreading conifer growing to no more than 20cm (8ins) in height but eventually forming a mat of 1.8m (6ft) or more across. The long, training shoots are clothed with soft, feathery bright green foliage which turns entirely bronze in winter. It hugs the ground and will cascade over rocks in and ledges. A striking winter garden plant.

Where?

Plant in full sun at the front of wide beds and borders, on rock banks, to soften the edges of paving or anywhere that good ground cover is required.

How?

Any well drained soil. Drought tolerant once established and very hardy. Prune stems selectively to control spread.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
