Juniperus squamata Meyeri

Flaky Juniper

Creates a less formal shape than other junipers

A strong, spreading juniper growing to around 1.2m (4ft) in height with a spread of 1.8m (6ft), vase shaped when young becoming more rounded with age. The long branches reach outwards and upwards and the tips are slightly drooping. The dense, needle-like foliage is blue-green, becoming silver-blue in winter. It combines well with more ground hugging varieties and makes a splendid specimen as it matures.

Where?

Plant in full sun or semi shade in wide beds and borders, on banks, to contrast with broad-leaved evergreens or in gravel.

How?

Any well drained soil. Drought tolerant once established and very hardy. Prune stems selectively to control height and spread.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
