Juniperus chinensis  Stricta

Chinese juniper

Striking specimen with scented foliage

A compact conifer with upright branches forming a flame-shaped cone of soft, blue green foliage. It grows slowly to 1.8m (6ft) or more in height with a spread of 75cm (30ins). It makes a strong focal point in a planting scheme, surrounded by low shrubs and ground cover plants, and contrasts well with golden or purple foliage.  Small purple fruits are attractive against the aromatic foliage later in the year.

Where?

Plant in full sun in an open position in beds and borders. Good as a stand along specimen or on a large rock bank. Use to add height with low growing conifers and grasses.

How?

Any well-drained soil that is not waterlogged. Grows well on alkaline soils including chalk. Can be lightly trimmed to encourage a more formal shape.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
