Juniperus × pfitzeriana Blue and Gold

juniper 'Blue and Gold'

Unusual two-toned foliage

A small, spreading shrub growing to 60cm (2ft) with a spread of 90cm (3ft) or more in a few years. The foliage is soft blue green, generously flecked with pale yellow, creating a light and attractive effect throughout the year. Graceful, slightly arched, spreading branches make excellent ground cover and are good at hiding eyesores at ground level.

Plant in full sun in an open position at the front of beds and borders. Good to soften the edges of paving, on banks and in gravel.  Use as ground cover with cotoneaster, vinca, euonymus, erica and other prostrate conifer varieties.

Any well-drained soil that is not waterlogged. Grows well on alkaline soils including chalk. Can be selectively pruned in spring to control height and spread.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
