Chamaecyparis pisifera Boulevard

Sawara Cypress

Large conical form with blue/green foliage

This popular and versatile variety has lovely soft silvery, blue-green leaves which look almost 'fluffy', especially in spring. The leaves turn a darker blue and often take on a purple tinge in winter.

A slow growing conifer happy in sun or part shade and its attractive dense, cone shape makes it especially suitable for large containers, rock or gravel gardens. Makes a fabulous focal point in a bed or border.

Happy in any well-drained soil and able to cope with drought once established. Unhappy in waterlogged soils. Use a good quality potting compost for container growing.

The origins of this plant lie in Central and Southern Japan.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
