Clematis montana Fragrant Spring

Masses of early season flowers

This variety is covered with masses of elegant, scented, pink flowers with cream centres in spring. The flowers make a lovely contrast with rich- dark green leaves which have a purple tint when young. Loved by bees and wildlife. Plant near a doorway or path where you can enjoy the scent, will quickly cover a wall, trellis or pergola.

Where?

Happiest growing in part shade sheltered from cold winds, in a moist, well-drained, neutral or chalky soil.

How?

Add goodness to the soil by digging in planting compost. Clematis like their roots kept cool so if they are not in the shade, cover the soil with slate or stone chippings. Prune lightly after flowering aiming to simply remove dead flower heads.

This variety was first introduced in Netherlands in 1992. Pruning group 1.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot at least 15cm away from the wall, fence or support. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant – along with its supporting cane in the hole, leaning onto the support. The top of the rootball needs to be 8cm below the level of the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Arrange and tie the stems onto the support. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year. Mulch with bark chippings or stones to keep the roots cool.
