Clematis alpina Constance

Alpine Clematis

Perfect for growing in a container or pot

A free flowering, tough variety with semi-double, deep pink flowers and pretty rich-green leaves. The bell-shaped flowers nod in the breeze and are followed by beautiful fluffy seed heads. An early variety, flowering in April and May. Good in a container with a support or plant against a wall or fence. Will also scramble through a large shrub.

Where?

Happiest in full sun or part shade and can stand up to cold winds. Best in a moist well-drained soil.

How?

Add goodness to the soil by digging in planting compost. Clematis like their roots kept cool so if they are not in the shade, cover the soil with slate or stone chippings. Use a good quality compost for container growing. This clematis is in pruning group 1. Prune lightly after flowering aiming to simply remove dead flower heads.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot at least 15cm away from the wall, fence or support. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant – along with its supporting cane in the hole, leaning onto the support. The top of the rootball needs to be 8cm below the level of the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Arrange and tie the stems onto the support. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year. Mulch with bark chippings or stones to keep the roots cool.
