Clematis Early Sensation

A profusion of white blooms in early spring

An early flowering evergreen clematis, that is particularly good as a conservatory plant. From March to April it is coverd in gorgeous, creamy white flowers that have a greenish-cream centre. A lovely plant that is particularly well suited to a container on the patio. Keep the tender early shots protected from late frosts and snails.

Happy in sun or part shade. Plant in a spot where the plant can climb over a wall or fence, or through a shrub or tree.

Plant in a moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Add goodness to the soil by digging in planting compost. Clematis like their roots kept cool so if they are not in the shade, cover the soil with slate or stone chippings. In the first year after planting prune back hard to approximately one foot above ground level leaving two or three healthy buds. On established plants prune back to approximately five feet in the winter or early spring before the plant starts to grow then again lightly just after flowering to encourage a second flush of flowers.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot at least 15cm away from the wall, fence or support. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant – along with its supporting cane in the hole, leaning onto the support. The top of the rootball needs to be 8cm below the level of the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Arrange and tie the stems onto the support. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year. Mulch with bark chippings or stones to keep the roots cool.
