Clematis Comtesse de Bouchaud

An abundance of flowers in early summer

A very old variety, and still one of the best pink flowered Clematis! Fluffy yellow centres set off the rosy-pink flowers that cover the plant from early to late summer.

Happy in sun or part shade, this variety is suitable for any location. The flowers will be a deeper colour when grown in some shade. Keep roots cool by covering with rocks or pebbles or a deep mulch. Grow on a trellis or wires for support or scramble through a shrub for late colour.

In the first year after planting prune back hard to approximately one foot above ground level leaving two or three healthy buds. On established plants prune back annually to approximately three feet in the winter or early spring before the plant starts to grow.

Pruning Group 3.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot at least 15cm away from the wall, fence or support. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant – along with its supporting cane in the hole, leaning onto the support. The top of the rootball needs to be 8cm below the level of the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Arrange and tie the stems onto the support. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year. Mulch with bark chippings or stones to keep the roots cool.
