Clematis cirrhosa Jingle Bells

Unusual winter flowering variety

This variety has pretty, creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers with a sweet citrus smell during winter - more noticeable in warm sheltered corners. Small glossy dark-green leaves are tinged bronze as the weather gets colder, and contrast with the flowers and silvery seed heads. Lovely planted on a wall or fence near a path or doorway where you can enjoy scented flowers. Good in a container, with a support.

Happiest in a sheltered, sunny spot in a moist well-drained soil.

Add goodness to the soil by digging in planting compost. Use a good quality compost for container growing. Clematis like their roots kept cool so if they are not in the shade, cover the soil with slate or stone chippings. Prune lightly after flowering aiming to simply remove dead flower heads.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot at least 15cm away from the wall, fence or support. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant – along with its supporting cane in the hole, leaning onto the support. The top of the rootball needs to be 8cm below the level of the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Arrange and tie the stems onto the support. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year. Mulch with bark chippings or stones to keep the roots cool.
