Clematis Barbara Jackman

Amazing, large decorative flowers

This cultivar bears wide single flowers that are lavender in colour striped with dark magenta that bloom all along the twining stems that are covered with medium green leaves which appear during late spring to early summer.

Can be planted and trained to cover walls, trellis, posts, fences, arbours or to cover rocky sites.

Prefers a rich, well-drained soil that receives full Sun or partial shade. In the first year after planting prune back hard to approximately one foot above ground level leaving two or three healthy buds. On established plants prune back to approximately five feet in the winter or early spring before the plant starts to grow then again lightly just after flowering to encourage a second flush of flowers.

Late summer or autumn sees a second crop of flowers. Pruning Group 2.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot at least 15cm away from the wall, fence or support. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant – along with its supporting cane in the hole, leaning onto the support. The top of the rootball needs to be 8cm below the level of the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Arrange and tie the stems onto the support. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year. Mulch with bark chippings or stones to keep the roots cool.
