Pseudosasa japonica

arrow bamboo, metake

A vigorous bamboo suitable for large gardens

A very robust and vigorous bamboo forming a thicket of canes up to 5m (16ft) or more in height. The arching canes and glossy green leaves create a lush, jungle effect and make an effective barrier or screen. Tolerant of most growing conditions this bamboo will thrive where others struggle. This is a running bamboo which will become invasive if not contained.

Plant in full sun or shade in beds and borders. A good boundary and screening plant.

Any well drained, reasonably moist soil. Put a root barrier in place to control spread at time of planting. Remove papery haulms from the canes to maintain a tidy appearance.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
