Pleioblastus simonii

Simon bamboo

A more compact bamboo

A medium sized bamboo producing clumps of canes up to 4m (12ft) or more in height. The canes are green and retain their papery haulms giving them a striped appearance. They are freely produced in the growing season making this an ideal bamboo for a screen or as a hedge. The foliage is abundant and green and moves nicely in the breeze. It is more clump forming than many bamboos, but will run if not contained.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in beds and borders. A good boundary and screening plant.

Any well drained, reasonably moist soil. Put a root barrier in place to control spread at time of planting.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
