Magnify glass

Fargesia nitida

Attractive non-invasive form

An elegant clump-forming bamboo with upright, arching purple-flushed canes and slender dark green leaves. The lush leaves weighs down the tips of the shoots, adding to the graceful habit. A bamboo that does not invade, so a good choice for height in a smaller garden.

Where?

Plant in semi-shade in beds and borders. A good boundary and screening plant. Excellent as a stand-alone specimen or in a large pot.

How?

Any well drained, reasonably moist soil. Remove any papery old canes to maintain a tidy appearance and cut off the lower side shoots to display canes. Do not allow it to dry out, especially as a young plant.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
