Magnify glass

Fargesia murieliae Simba

Umbrella bamboo

Compact form perfect for a container

A compact bamboo with dense, upright canes up and bright green leaves. The canes are bright green at first, becoming yellow green, they look best with the lower leaves removed. An exceptionally hardy bamboo and one of the best to grow because it stays in a clump and is not invasive.

Where?

Plant in full sun or semi-shade in beds and borders. A good statement plant and contrast to broad leaves. Excellent as a stand-alone specimen or in a large pot.

How?

Any well drained, reasonably moist soil. Remove any old papery canes to maintain a tidy appearance and cut off the lower side shoots to display canes.

Planting instructions

Water the plant in its pot thoroughly before planting – give it a good soaking. Prepare the area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot. Dig compost into the base of the hole. Remove the pot and position the plant in the hole, with the top of the rootball about level with the surrounding soil. Refill the planting hole with a mixture of garden soil and compost, firming as you go. Water in well and keep well watered during the plant's first year.
