Nandina 'Gulf Stream' is a resilient evergreen shrub with soft, colourful foliage and a spectacular autumn display.
This low-maintenance shrub is ideal for any busy household where gardening needs to be quick and simple. Likewise, it makes a wonderful structural addition for more complex gardening styles, where its bushy evergreen foliage provides year-round colour and shape. This easy-care shrub is compact and easy to grow, thriving in a sunny spot and tolerating most soil types. Growing to a neat maximum size of around 1.2m, it's just as well suited to a large container as it is to mixed borders and is also easy to keep in shape with just a quick yearly snip with a pair of shears. The colour-changing foliage provides a wonderful display throughout the year, with the young growth emerging with a bronzy hue, before turning green for summer and then to a vibrant red for autumn and winter. What's more, it has attractive clusters of white flowers for additional interest in summer.
If you're looking for an easy and reliable plant to grow for year-round fuss-free colour, give this striking architectural plant a try.

Nandina domestica prefers a sheltered position to an exposed or windy site. It needs a sunny location, close to a south or west-facing wall would provide the perfect conditions.
This variety thrives in most soils, but prefers a rich soil which retains a bit of moisture. To improve your growing conditions, you can mix a good dose of compost into the planting hole prior to planting. If planting in a container, use a heavier soil-based compost rather than multipurpose.
Water regularly during its first season to help it to anchor itself into the soil. Once established in a border, it can usually source water from the soil itself. Shrubs planted in containers require regular watering during the summer months, particularly frequently when the weather is hot.
To improve the overall health of your plant, feed it occasionally during spring and summer with an all-purpose liquid feed, especially if it's planted in a pot where nutrients can quickly diminish.
Lightly clip this shrub to shape after flowering in summer. 'Gulf Stream' is a fairly compact shrub so shouldn't get out of hand, but a yearly trim will help keep it bushy.
