Mirabelle Plum
Compact and low maintenance, producing exceptionally sweet and juicy small yellow plums in summer.
The Mirabelle plum tree, botanically known as Prunus domestica subsp. Syriaca, is a reliable choice for high-yielding summer fruit, with an unfussy nature and plenty of seasonal interest to bring to the garden. Throughout the year, the bushy, dense habit provides structure, while in summer the leafy canopy brings shade to the garden. It's compact and slow growing which makes it the perfect choice for a smaller-sized or low-maintenance garden as well as orchards and informal wildlife gardens. During spring you can expect a lovely display of white blossom, followed by a rich offering of juicy, sweet plums in the summer. The fruit of 'Mirabelle de Nancy' are small in size but big on flavour and absolutely perfect for snacking on. Yellow skinned with a red speckly blush, they bring colour to the garden as well as a tasty treat to pick and eat fresh. The juiciness and sweetness of these pretty little plums is second to none, and they also make a wonderful sticky, sweet jam.
Easy to grow, compact and very productive, producing tasty edible fruits in summer and pretty blossom in spring.

Plant Care & Advice

Prunus domestica subsp. Syriaca (Mirabelle plum trees) are happiest in a sunny, sheltered site and in soil which is not too dry in summer. Happy in most soil types as long as they are not wet in winter. Plant close to other fruit tree varieties to encourage pollination and achieve a larger crop. Dig a hole which is deep and wide enough to fit the entire root system. Add well rotted manure or garden compost to the hole  before planting. Choose the best side of the tree to face into the garden and position into the hole, then backfill with soil and firm down.  Keep a 50cm diameter area around the base of the tree free of weeds for at least the first year. Stake the tree whilst it is young to help prevent it from leaning. It's worth protecting the trunk of the tree with a rabbit guard if rabbits regularly visit your garden.

Water in after planting and keep well watered throughout the first year. Feed with a suitable fertiliser each spring for the first few years. Prune if necessary in summer after the fruit has been picked. Remove dead branches first, then any branches which are crossing over or rubbing on each other to create an airy, open framework. The new growth can be reduced by about a third if a more compact shape is desired. Although flowers are fairly frost resistant you can cover the blossom when spring frosts threaten if possible.
