Spring Bank Holiday action plan

The promise of summer is in the air, so make the most of the bank holiday and transform your outdoor space into a place to be proud of. It doesn’t take much effort to have an impact, meaning you can make over an area in just a few hours and still have time to enjoy a cocktail in the sunshine. Concentrate on a small area to really see the benefits, using planted containers, comfy cushions and stylish ornaments to bring an entirely new look to a space. And don’t forget the twilight hours – lanterns and lights bring magic to a space as the sun goes down, meaning you can really make the most of your efforts.

We used:-

  • A bistro set
  • Pre-planted containers and hanging baskets
  • A herb-filled container
  • Cushions
  • Buddha statue
  • Decorative garden mirror
  • Fleece blanket
  • Lanterns and tea light holders
  • Fairy lights

Step 1
Boost colour with vibrant containers and hanging baskets. You’ll find pre-planted ones in-store right now, meaning we’ve done all the hard work for you. Combine containers of similar colours for a designer look with a coordinated feel. Also group pots to create impact.

Step 2
Brighten garden furniture with comfy cushions to create the perfect retreat for a sunny afternoon. Choose patterns and fabrics that complement the colours of your plants, not being afraid to shy away from bold designs. Remember to bring cushions in at night-time or if rain is forecast.

Step 3
Add the finishing touches to your space with carefully placed features – statuary and outdoor mirrors create great focal points. Keep the style consistent to avoid a jumble of items that will make a space look fussy and uncoordinated. Buddhas and wind chimes are great for bringing a taste of the east.

Step 4
Grow table-top herbs to pep up alfresco cocktails and food. Parsley is a tasty addition to leafy salads, while mint is perfect for a refreshing mojito – use herbs as soon as they’re picked for the best possible flavour. Add dried herbs to the dying embers of a barbecue, to release a wonderful aroma into the air.

Step 5
Transform your garden as the sun goes down using lanterns, fairy lights and candles to enhance the mood – it’s amazing how magical a space can look at twilight. Use blankets and fleecy throws to keep warm and extend the party into the night.

Top Tip:

A bistro set is a great choice for any plot – large enough to use for a tasty meal, but small enough to move around depending on where the sun is.
