How to: Grow tasty carrots - Part 2

What you'll need:

  • Hand fork
  • Watering can
  • Horticultural fleece
  • Bamboo canes

Step 1
Keep the soil around seedlings weed free. It’s easiest to remove weeds by hand as this limits disturbance to the carrots.

Step 2
Water the seedlings in very dry weather, although don’t go overboard. Carrots are generally pretty drought resistant and need little water.

Step 3
Thin out the seedlings when they’re fully formed. Simply pull out the weaker ones by hand, leaving 3-5cm between those left in the ground.

Step 4
A pest called carrot root fly can attack carrots at the time of thinning. Prevent it by covering the crop with fleece supported by bamboo canes
