How To Make An Easter Terrarium

We’re going to show you how to make a stunning hanging terrarium filled with striking succulents. This is a wonderful Easter decoration that you can personalise to suit your own taste.

You will need the following items:

  • A hanging terrarium from our spring collection
  • An assortment of mini succulents
  • A hand trowel
  • Gravel
  • Gardening gloves
  • Compost suitable for cacti and succulents
  • Seasonal decorations of your choice
  • Moss
  • A small watering can.

Follow our step by step guide to create your terrarium

  1. Place a layer of small gravel in the base of your terrarium. This will allow water to drain away. Push the gravel up at the back to create some height and form a sloping hill. Next add about an inch of cactus compost. This is fast draining soil that doesn’t retain much moisture.
  2. Using a small watering can, water the soil very lightly. Be careful not to over water as this can cause the roots of the succulents to rot.
  3. Now you can plant your succulents. Choose some of the taller plants to add height at the back, work your way forwards arranging the other succulents as you go. Space them nicely so they are not too overcrowded. Make sure the roots are covered in soil, adding a little extra to stabilise them if needed.
  4. If you have a paintbrush to hand, you can carefully brush off any excess soil from the leaves of the plants. Top-dress the terrarium with some moss. If you wish, you could add some coloured pebbles for a bit of texture.
  5. And finally, add your chosen decorations for a seasonal finish. Here we have used some coloured eggs and some felt decorations.

Choose a nice spot to hang your terrarium. Find a place with bright light but away from direct sunlight. You could hang a single terrarium by itself, or group several together for a really striking arrangement.
