How to: Guide To Perennial Herbs

Imagine how nice it would be to step outside and harvest your own herbs. Choose perennials and they’ll provide flavour year after year.

Herbs are very easy to grow – all you need is a sunny spot. They need to be harvested regularly to keep the plants in good health, so it’s best to avoid growing those you won’t use – opt for those you regularly cook with.


Mint can be invasive so it’s best grown in a pot on its own. Famously good with new potatoes or peas, it also makes a refreshing tea if you pour hot water over a few leaves. Did you know you can get apple, strawberry or chocolate mint too?



Bay leaves are not only useful in a wide range of dishes, the bay tree looks lovely as well. If you’re growing a bay tree in a pot it will need protecting with horticultural fleece in winter.



A member of the onion family with edible flowers and leaves. Just chop up the long stalks with kitchen scissors and sprinkle them over salads and cooked vegetables. Chives need slightly more water than other herbs.



There are many different evergreen types to choose from and they grow well in a pot or when planted in cracks in paving. It’s great with Mediterranean vegetable dishes, fish and many meats, and attracts bees to the garden too.



Parsley can be quite tricky to grow from seed, so it’s a good idea to grow more than you need. It’s actually a biennial rather than a perennial so you’ll need to replant it every two years, but it’s such a useful herb that we’ve included it here.
