Denholm Potato Growers

Denholm Potato Growers

Denholm must surely hold the record for being the longest serving grower of seed potatoes for Dobbies Garden Centres, a record currently standing at 53 years.

Alex G. Denholm has been well known in the potato merchant field for almost one hundred years. Based nearby our Edinburgh store, the company was first established in 1925 as a potato grower and merchant for farmers across the Lothians. Today the company proudly remains a small family run business with 5 permanent staff.

In 1982 their sister company Denholm Potato Growers was established to meet the ever increasing demand and is now growing and supplying potatoes to farmers and garden centres across the United Kingdom. Here at Dobbies we continue to be their largest and longest running customer.

Dobbies took their first delivery of seed potatoes to sell in store in 1966. In that first year 5 tonnes of seed potatoes were delivered, a figure that has increased substantially to around 100 tonnes each year across all Dobbies stores in England and Scotland. It is estimated that during our long relationship with Denholm, over 26 million seed potatoes have been grown and supplied.

Three generations of the Logan family now own the business – James Logan, his son Hamish and his dad Willie. George Lambert is the firm’s long-standing Seed Potato Operations Manager and as such has personally been supplying Dobbies for the past 35 years.
