Sea green, sickle shaped leaves and showy white flower clusters will add an exotic look to a sunny, sheltered garden.
An elegant, fast growing tree which has the most beautiful, mottled silver-grey and cream bark that's a perfect contrast to the drooping, sea-green leaves. Snow Gum is a hardy variety of Eucalyptus, growing in the mountains of Eastern Australia at high altitudes where snow occurs each year. With a spreading shape, this exotic looking tree needs plenty of space but will reward you with year 'round colour from the leaves and peeling bark along with large, showy clusters of fluffy white flowers in summer. The waxy, aromatic leaves rustle in the slightest breeze and will shrug off salt laden winds making this a first class tree for exposed coastal locations where many evergreens will not thrive. Eucalyptus pauciflora subsp. niphophila will also steal the show in a sunny, well drained position and is a graceful addition to any large garden.
A fast growing tree with beautiful leaves, bark and flowers making it a hard working addition to any large, sunny garden.
Snow Gums are fast growing and need plenty of room if they are to be grown to their full size. The leaf colours will be most intense in a sunny position and dry or well drained soil. When planting, dig a hole that's at least twice the size of the original container and add a handful of suitable fertiliser to the soil to give your tree a good start. Water well before and after planting and occasionally during prolonged dry weather for the first year until the plant is established. Eucalyptus are drought tolerant so need very little water thereafter. A handful of general fertiliser can be sprinkled around the base of the plant each spring and a layer of garden compost or well rotted manure can be used to top up the soil. Plants can be cut back to within a few centimetres of the main stems each year in late spring to keep them bushy and maintain the young, rounded leaves. 'Adult' leaves will be more prominent on trees that are allowed to grow taller. Your tree will need to be staked until the roots are established.
