Escallonia 'Apple Blossom' is a beautiful evergreen shrub with pink and white flowers during summer.

Very easy to grow and reliable, providing year-round interest in borders or as an attractive low hedge. With a bushy and compact habit, the stiff branching stems of this Escallonia grow typically to 1.2m with similar spread, although they can reach a maximum height of up to 2.5m if left un-pruned. The dark, glossy leaves are the perfect contrasting setting for clusters of apple-blossom pink and white flowers that appear from mid-summer onwards. An ideal shrub for a small garden, shrubbery and also useful for coastal gardens, tolerating salty air. The small, tough evergreen leaves maintain year-round structure with the added bonus of long-lasting summer flowers which also attract bees. This low-maintenance and unfussy shrub is perfect if you want something that will look great, but mainly look after itself. All it asks is for a quick trim once a year to keep it neatly in shape.

Enjoy summer-long colour with this fabulous, low-maintenance shrub. Perfect for small gardens, creating low hedges or growing in borders.

Plant Care & Advice

Escallonia likes an open, sunny situation in a bed or border although it can tolerate some shade. It's best suited to a sheltered location away from strong winds. Tolerant of salty air but dislikes long periods of extreme cold.

Unfussy about soil type, you can grow Escallonia in any soil type aside from waterlogged soil. It thrives in a moist but well-drained soil. Ideal for growing as a free-standing shrub or as a low hedge. If growing as a hedge, position the plants approximately 40cm apart from each other.

Water well when first planted and then continue to water regularly over the first summer to help establish a good root system. Once established, Escallonia will only require watering very occasionally, if at all.

In the first year, it's a good idea to feed Escallonia with an all-purpose liquid feed to aid quick establishment and encourage healthy new growth.

Cut out dead or damaged wood in early spring before growth commences, or prune more thoroughly after flowering in midsummer. Lightly clip to shape after flowering when necessary, particularly if growing as a hedge to encourage bushiness.
