A pure white sport of 'The Mayflower'. It is always amongst the first English Roses to flower and continues to flower in flushes until the first frosts. There is a strong Old Rose fragrance. It is remarkably healthy and extremely winter hardy, with upright, bushy, twiggy growth. Named for the founder of Portmeirion Pottery.
Susan Williams-Ellis was a designer who, together with her husband Euan Cooper-Willis, founded Portmeirion Pottery. Susan was a great enthusiast of the English Roses and painted some beautiful watercolours of them.
'Susan Williams-Ellis is a healthy garden shrub with well-shaped, twiggy, bushy growth and nice foliage. It looks particularly beautiful in a mixed border mingling with other plants and perennials. It is particularly winter hardy.
Roses thrive on sunshine, ideally a minimum of four hours each day to perform their best. However, roses can still perform well in shadier locations, with selected varieties suitable for growing against a north wall.
Roses can be planted year round, but avoid doing so when the ground is frozen, waterlogged or in periods of drought. Dusting the roots with Mycorrhizal Fungi when planting will aid establishment. Allow your rose plenty of space to develop to its best, sited away from intense competition of trees & hedges.
Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of the plant in early spring to help retain moisture and help keep competing weeds at bay. Gently fork rose fertiliser into the soil surface and continue to water well throughout the growing season. Dead-head flowers to encourage fresh new blooms to follow.
