The flowers of 'Gentle Hermione' are some of the most perfectly formed examples of true old roses. The blooms open into shallow cups of delicately pink petals, with a blush colour on the outside, maturing to a pearlescent hue as the flower matures. These petals are able to resist rain, meaning that they last longer for you to enjoy. The foliage starts with a hint of red, turning green and dark green as it ages. The flowers are filled with a powerful myrrh fragrance and make lovely cut flowers for indoor arrangements.
This delicate rose's name is inspired by William Shakespeare's 'The Winter's Tale' in which Hermione is the beautiful and virtuous Queen of Sicilia.
This rose is vigorous and healthy, growing into medium-sized shrub which will repeat flower successfully throughout the season. It can spread out as it matures, making it ideal for the middle or back of a border, or even as a screen.
Roses thrive on sunshine, ideally a minimum of four hours each day to to perform their best. However, roses can still perform well in shadier locations, with selected varieties suitable for growing against a north wall.
Roses can be planted year round, but avoid doing so when the ground is frozen, waterlogged or in periods of drought. Dusting the roots with Mycorrhizal Fungi when planting will aid establishment. Allow your rose plenty of space to develop to its best, sited away from intense competition of trees & hedges.
Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of the plant in early spring to help retain moisture and help keep competing weeds at bay. Gently fork rose fertiliser into the soil surface and continue to water well thoughout the growing season. Dead-head flowers to encourage fresh new blooms to follow.
