White Variegated Japanese Sedge

Carex oshimensis 'Everest' is a tough yet smart and distinctive plant that gives year-round colour for very little effort.

A well-behaved, grass-like plant that is both easy to look after and adaptable to lots of different situations. Like its sister, 'Evergold', Carex oshimensis 'Everest' is a useful evergreen that brings colour to the garden all year round. It's particularly useful in front gardens where its smart appearance and undemanding nature are especially welcome. Its variegation is opposite to that of 'Evergold', being creamy white stripes around a central blade of green - it's slightly darker but none the worse for it. Those bright margins shine out, making an excellent contrast with bold-leaved plants such as hostas. Suffers from few pests and diseases and is generally what gardeners call a good 'do-er'!

Go stripy this season with this super sedge that gives year-round colour and interest.

Plant Care & Advice

Although this is an undemanding plant, it pays to give it a bit of attention at the start so you get the best results for the minimum of effort.

Pick a site in sun or partial shade (it will grow in full shade, but the growth will be slower). Dig over the planting site and if the soil is poor, very dry or stony, add some well-rotted manure or compost. Soak the roots before planting by submerging the pot in a bucket of water for a few minutes. Then plant into your prepared soil and water in well, 'puddling' water around the plant so the soil settles around the roots.

Water well in the first season to get the roots established - once the plants have rooted well into the surrounding soil, no more watering will be necessary, except in severe droughts.

Feeding isn't strictly necessary in most soils, but if after a year or so your plants look like they could do with perking up, apply a balanced general purpose feed like Bonemeal or Growmore in spring as the plants come into growth.

Pruning is easy - simply comb through the plants with your fingers in late winter to remove any dead leaves.
