New ideas for spring bulbs

While you're thinking about winter colour, it's also time to think ahead to spring as now is the time to plant spring bulbs. It's well worth doing as those first glimpses of colour when bulbs flower are a refreshing sight after the winter.

There are some bulbs that are regular favourites, and for good reason... October is the best time to plant daffodils and November is the best time for tulips. But if you'd like something a little out of the ordinary, here are three suggestions...

Leucojum Aestivum

These are also known as summer snowflakes, but don't be fooled by the name - they bloom in mid to late spring. The plants have long, grass-like foliage and dainty white drooping bell flowers - and they smell lovely too.

Narcissus Green Eye

This is a daffodil with a difference - it has pristine white petals surrounding a vibrant green centre. It's a stylish and elegant plant and will look stunning planted in drifts.

Camassia Quamash

Camassia Quamash

Although it's not as well-known as other bulbs, this is very easy to grow - and it tolerates damp better than most bulbs. Commonly known as camas, it has lots of vivid blue starry flowers on a tall, erect stalk.

Bulbs should be planted three to four times as deep as the bulb itself. If you're planting in pots, make sure that they have good drainage.
